{"id":9340,"date":"2023-05-31T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9340"},"modified":"2023-05-31T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T05:00:00","slug":"song-of-the-submarine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/song-of-the-submarine\/","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Submarine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn99021999\/1915-05-31\/ed-1\/seq-4\/\">Omaha Daily Bee, May 31, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I nose along with decks awash\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All hid by flying spray;<br\/>And carefully I search the sea<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For ships on which to prey.<br\/>For none may know just when I come,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And none know when I go;<br\/>As quick as breath, as sure as death,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I send them all below.<br\/>Into her side my missile goes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To wound her sore, and then<br\/>Like frightened sheep, into the deep,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Drop cursing, praying men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Sing ho! for ships I\u2019ve met and sunk;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sing ho! my hearties, ho!<br\/>A great machine quick turned to junk,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Gone to a grave below<br\/>Where silent things weave in and out<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And ragged sea weeds grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I nose along beneath the fog<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That curtains all the sea;<br\/>A slimy eel, all made of steel,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A thing of mystery.<br\/>For none may see and none may hear,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nor learn my deadly hate<br\/>Until they know the crashing blow<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That shivers every plate.<br\/>As through her side my missile goes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To wound her sore and deep,<br\/>And from her deck, a twisted wreck,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Her white-faced seamen leap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Sing ho! for ships I\u2019ve yet to meet;<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sing ho! my hearties, ho!<br\/>Pick and pride of some mighty fleet,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Gone at a single blow,<br\/>Down where the slimy sea-snakes creep,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Their evil eyes aglow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, May 31, 1915.
