By Innes Randolph.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>[The following verses, which were set to music, and formed one of the favorite songs of the generation now nearly gone, were written almost immediately after the close of the Civil War, when the South was in the throes of reconstruction, and when an oath of allegiance and consequent pardon were prerequisite to the rights of citizenship.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, I\u2019m a good old Rebel,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Now that\u2019s just what I am;<br\/>For this \u201cfair Land of Freedom\u201d<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I don\u2019t care a dam.<br\/>I\u2019m glad I fit against it\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I only wish we\u2019d won,<br\/>And I don\u2019t want no pardon<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For anything I\u2019ve done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I hates the Constitution,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;This great Republic, too;<br\/>I hates the Freedmen\u2019s Buro,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In uniforms of blue.<br\/>I hates the nasty eagle,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With all his brag and fuss;<br\/>The lyin\u2019 thievin\u2019 Yankees,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I hates \u2018em wuss and wuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I hates the Yankee Nation<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And everything they do;<br\/>I hates the Declaration<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of Independence, too.<br\/>I hates the glorious Union,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u2019Tis dripping with our blood;<br\/>I hates the striped banner\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I fit it all I could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I followed old Mars\u2019 Robert<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For four year, near about,<br\/>Got wounded in three places,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And starved at Pint Lookout.<br\/>I cotched the roomatism<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A-campin\u2019 in the snow,<br\/>But I killed a chance of Yankees\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019d like to kill some mo\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Three hundred thousand Yankees<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Is stiff in Southern dust;<br\/>We got three hundred thousand<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Before they conquered us.<br\/>They died of Southern fever<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And Southern steel and shot;<br\/>I wish it was three millions<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Instead of what we got.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>I can\u2019t take up my musket<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And fight \u2018em now no more,<br\/>But I ain\u2019t agoin\u2019 to love \u2018em,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Now that is sartin sure.<br\/>And I don\u2019t want no pardon<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For what I was and am;<br\/>I won\u2019t be reconstructed<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And I don\u2019t care a dam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Richmond Times Dispatch, June 2, 1915.
