By Minna Irving.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Back from gory battle came a soldier Easter Day,<br\/>The streets were full of people in their Easter garments gay;<br\/>Silver bells were ringing in the steeples overhead,<br\/>The soldier he was wounded, and this is what he said:<br\/>\u201cIt\u2019s a long way to glory, it\u2019s a long way to go<br\/>From the dim and quiet churches where the Easter lilies blow.<br\/>Good-by to home and comfort, farewell to sweethearts dear,<br\/>It\u2019s a long, long way to glory, and my heart\u2019s right here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When the soldier joined the colors he was full of thoughts of Fame,<br\/>But he found among the trenches that they never spoke her name.<br\/>Coming home upon a furlough with his right arm in a sling,<br\/>He was strong for peace eternal when the chimes began to ring:<br\/>\u201cIt\u2019s a long way to glory, it\u2019s a long way to go,<br\/>The route is marked in crimson with the blood of friend and foe.<br\/>There\u2019s a girl I want to marry, we have waited \u2018most a year,<br\/>It\u2019s a long, long way to glory when my heart is here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would rather have a cottage, and a garden and a cow,<br\/>Than a V. C. on my bosom, and a laurel on my brow.<br\/>War has led me through his shambles till my soul is worn to rags;<br\/>Give us peace the wide world over, fold away the battle-flags;<br\/>It\u2019s a long way to glory, it\u2019s a long way to go,<br\/>It\u2019s a long way to glory and the hardest road I know.<br\/>From the snowy Easter lilies may the dove of peace appear,<br\/>It\u2019s a long, long way to glory, for my heart\u2019s right here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Topeka State Journal, June 4, 1915.
