{"id":9364,"date":"2023-06-13T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9364"},"modified":"2023-06-13T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T05:00:00","slug":"the-artist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/the-artist\/","title":{"rendered":"The Artist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn83030272\/1915-06-13\/ed-1\/seq-31\/\">The Sun, June 13, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>When nature with a mission grave<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Was by the Lord endowed<br\/>She painted on the sea a wave<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And on the sky a cloud.<br\/>And on the land she drew a hill<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And on the hill a tree,<br\/>And in the vale she placed a rill<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That traveled to the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And then, progressing without doubt,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She took a little brush<br\/>And in the stream she placed a trout,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And on the tree a thrush.<br\/>And on the waves she painted foam<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And roses in the wild;<br\/>And in the shelter of a home<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A woman and a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>And did all this perfection bring?<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ah, no! Experience shows<br\/>She caused the little thrush to sing,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Gave perfume to the rose.<br\/>And best of all, the artist wise,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And in her happiest style,<br\/>Put love into the woman\u2019s eyes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And made the baby smile!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Sun, June 13, 1915.
