By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Bill Jenkins used to toil an\u2019 think fur all that he was worth,<br\/>His purpose bein\u2019 to get out an\u2019 to elevate the earth.<br\/>He wanted reformation an\u2019 he wanted it fur fair,<br\/>An\u2019 he made his fellow-man the object of his special care.<br\/>If his fellow-man was hungry Bill could show him how the fact<br\/>Was due to some bad habit or some ill-considered act;<br\/>He was shocked beyond expression at the faults that he could find,<br\/>But willin\u2019 to be shocked some more, he sought to uplift human kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He drew comparisons \u2018twixt folks that didn\u2019t get along<br\/>An\u2019 those who like himself seemed rather confident an\u2019 strong.<br\/>He felt a bit superior an\u2019 the feelin\u2019 kind o\u2019 grew<br\/>That he hadn\u2019t no bad habits\u2014leastways only one or two.<br\/>Yet his schemes for reformation on a strictly wholesale plan,<br\/>They didn\u2019t seem of value to his sufferin\u2019 fellow-man.<br\/>He sometimes gave expressions to opinions almost rude<br\/>To what he would refer to as \u201cthe world\u2019s ingratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>He took the failure to accept his good advice to heart.<br\/>The folks admitted that his talk was mighty fine an\u2019 smart.<br\/>He didn\u2019t understand the ways of honest, kindly care.<br\/>Great wisdom ain\u2019t uncommon, but true sympathy is rare.<br\/>He stopped an\u2019 thought it over an\u2019 his pulse beat fast an\u2019 warm<br\/>As he said, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t wonder if it\u2019s me that needs reform!<br\/>This world would surely hit a pace that\u2019s generous an\u2019 good<br\/>If every one reformed hisself an\u2019 done the best he could.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Omaha Daily Bee, June 16, 1915.
