By Dana Burnet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCall me my minstrel,\u201d said the king,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cAnd let him sing a glee.<br\/>For I have won this summer day<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A mighty victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBetween the tides of dawn and dusk<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon a field I stood<br\/>And saw my gallant swords drink deep<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of body and of blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo bid my merry minstrel in<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With lute and silver thong,<br\/>And let him take my stained sword<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And sheathe it in a song!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The minstrel came, an ancient man,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And smote a silver string.<br\/>\u201cOh, gallant is the victory<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And mighty is the king!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt dawn he rode with all his knights<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Into a virgin field.<br\/>At dusk the blood of honest men<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Was stained upon his shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd in the houses of his foes<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A thousand leagues away,<br\/>The hearts of women bled and broke<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon a summer\u2019s day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat song is this?\u201d the monarch cried,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cWhat sorrow dost thou sing?\u201d<br\/>\u201cWhy, only of the victory<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That crowned my lord and king.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The minstrel smiled a fleeting smile<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And smote a splendid chord.<br\/>\u201cOh, gallant is the use of arms<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And mighty is the sword!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor on this day a greening field<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Was won at crimson cost;<br\/>And what the gods of war have gained<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The loves of men have lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd many a heart of friend and foe<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Has broken on this day,<br\/>And children starve and women weep<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A thousand leagues away!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThen cry the triumph to the stars<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And let the heavens ring!<br\/>For gallant is the victory!<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And mighty is the king!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Public Ledger, June 18, 1915.
