{"id":9438,"date":"2023-07-11T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-11T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspaperhistory.com\/?p=9438"},"modified":"2023-07-11T01:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-11T05:00:00","slug":"jim-and-joe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desperaudio.com\/newspaperpoetry\/jim-and-joe\/","title":{"rendered":"Jim and Joe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>From <a href=\"https:\/\/chroniclingamerica.loc.gov\/lccn\/sn85038485\/1915-07-11\/ed-1\/seq-38\/\">The Birmingham Age Herald, July 11, 1915<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Jim and Joe were boys together,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Knew the same swift forest streams,<br\/>Roamed the same fair fields and heather<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In the Land of Hope-filled Dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Jim was filled with strange ambition,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wealth he\u2019d wanted from the start;<br\/>Different was Joe\u2019s condition\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;He wanted but a tender heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Two fair sisters soon they married\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;All seemed happy for a while\u2014<br\/>But not long at home Jim tarried<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ere he sought Wealth\u2019s fickle smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Joe but labored through the morning,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Often, too, into the night;<br\/>For his wage, the smile adorning<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wife\u2019s and baby\u2019s faces bright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Jim grew rich, and with his power<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;O\u2019er his fellows held a sway,<br\/>But, with every passing hour<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Love was stealing swift away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Soon the maid whom Jim had married<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bowed her head and smiled the less;<br\/>Bravely, though, her cross she carried,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Speaking still of \u201cJim\u2019s success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Wealth was theirs, all of its treasure<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Theirs to gloat o\u2019er every day;<br\/>Yet they\u2019d lost in greater measure\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wealth had driven love away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Joe met many sad reverses.<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unto him was fortune vile;<br\/>Yet he never indulged in curses,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Rather did he seem to smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Though he hoped for fortune later,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;With a faith in God above,<br\/>He had found a treasure greater<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In the wealth of Mary\u2019s love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Though success and wealth we\u2019re after,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Oft we\u2019re losers in the end\u2014<br\/>Love makes best its own sweet laughter,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Hardship is its truest friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Birmingham Age Herald, July 11, 1915.
