By Alice Cary.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>True worth is in being, not seeming\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In doing each day that goes by<br\/>Some little good\u2014not in dreaming<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of great things to do by and by.<br\/>For whatever men say in blindness,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And in spite of the fancies of youth,<br\/>There\u2019s nothing so kingly as kindness,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There\u2019s nothing so royal as truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We get back our meet as we measure\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We cannot do wrong and feel right.<br\/>Nor can we give pain and gain pleasure,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For justice avenges each slight.<br\/>The air for the wing of the sparrow,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The bush for the robin and wren,<br\/>But always the path that is narrow<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And straight for the children of men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u2019Tis not in the pages of story<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The heart of its ills to beguile,<br\/>Though he who makes courtship to glory<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Gives all that he hath for her smile.<br\/>For when from her heights he has won her,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Alas! It is only to prove<br\/>That nothing\u2019s so sacred as honor,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And nothing\u2019s so royal as love!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We cannot make bargains for blisses,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nor catch them like fishes in nets;<br\/>And sometimes the thing our life misses<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Helps more than the thing which it gets.<br\/>For good lieth not in pursuing,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Nor gaining of great nor of small,<br\/>But just in the being, and doing<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As we would be done by, is all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Through envy, through malice, through hating,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Against the world, early and late,<br\/>No jot of our courage abating\u2014<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Our part is to work and to wait.<br\/>And slight is the sting of his trouble<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Whose winnings are less than his worth;<br\/>For he who is honest is noble,<br\/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Whatever his fortunes or birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Newark Evening Star, July 19, 1915.
