By Philander Johnson.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>One time we had an uplift down to Pohick on the Crick.<br\/>The talk of art an\u2019 culture came a-flyin\u2019 very thick.<br\/>We bought a lot of handsome books whose covers plainly showed<br\/>That when their authors talked of art, they talked of what they knowed.<br\/>We felt that we had found the way unto a life refined,<br\/>Whose object would be beauty an\u2019 a disposition kind.<br\/>We were strong for classic painting an\u2019 for sculpture so sublime,<br\/>An\u2019 architecture that defied the ravages of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Then from a mighty shock the world stood trembling and afraid.<br\/>It came from the headquarters where the classic art was made.<br\/>The painter dropped his brushes and the sculptor left his clay<br\/>An\u2019 the singers marched in silence to the fierce, incessant fray.<br\/>We learned how works of beauty that were built through patient years<br\/>Were swept into destruction in a storm of rage and tears\u2014<br\/>So maybe it\u2019s the old-time way to which we\u2019d better stick<br\/>An\u2019 jes\u2019 live plain an\u2019 humble down to Pohick on the Crick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Evening Star, July 22, 1915.
