What a night was Halloween\n \u00a0 At our home up the state!\n The night we told ghost stories,\n \u00a0 Huddled close about the grate.\n \n Odd taps came on the window pane,\n \u00a0 Queer creakings on the stair;\n You never knew what minute\n \u00a0 You would get an awful scare.\n \n On Halloween, in our old home,\n \u00a0 We daren\u2019t raise the shades\n For fear we\u2019d see a pumpkin head,\n \u00a0 With eyes and nose ablaze.\n \n But here in town we raise the shade,\n \u00a0 And all that we can see\n Is \u2018cross the shaft, a table set\n \u00a0 And people having tea.\n \n At our old home on Halloween\n \u00a0 The gate would disappear\n And hide itself behind the barn.\n \u00a0 That couldn\u2019t happen here.\n \n Our home is in a Harlem flat,\n \u00a0 Up five flights, down the hall;\n We have no gate, no yard, no barn;\n \u00a0 Just doors and stairs and wall.\n \n On Halloween, in our old home,\n \u00a0 We had a feast of grub;\n We ate our fill of nuts and ducked\n \u00a0 For apples in a tub.\n \n But here we play no tricks at all;\n \u00a0 No ghosts are heard or seen.\n New York\u2019s a lonely place to be\n \u00a0 On dear old Halloween!<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Ah!
