By Berton Braley.<\/em>\n \n\n The artists and critics my rave as they will\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Of prudishness prim and precise,\n They claim that it hampers their art and their skill\n \u00a0 \u00a0 To have to be proper and nice.\n But for all of its squeamishness, all of its cant,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 It holds us to decency, plain,\n And I\u2019m willing to lift up my voice in a chant,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 A hymn to the \u201cPuritan Strain.\u201d\n \n It may be a trifle too rigid and grim\n \u00a0 \u00a0 And hard on the spirit of Youth,\n But it keeps the commandments from growing too dim\n \u00a0 \u00a0 And it holds to the right and the truth.\n It\u2019s harsh and unyielding in many a way\n \u00a0 \u00a0 That causes but worry and pain,\n But a man or a nation won\u2019t go far astray\n \u00a0 \u00a0 If controlled by the \u201cPuritan Strain.\u201d\n \n It\u2019s helped us to conquer the country we own\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Which stretches from sea unto sea,\n It\u2019s sobered and tempered us while we have grown\n \u00a0 \u00a0 A nation united and free.\n It\u2019s grappling undaunted with problems most vast,\n \u00a0 \u00a0 With power of hand and of brain;\n That grim, granite purpose will save us at last\u2014\n \u00a0 \u00a0 Thank God for the \u201cPuritan Strain!\u201d<\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From The Seattle Star, December 6, 1912.
